On January 1, 2021, Maine’s new Earned Paid Leave law takes effect. Maine employers – including school units – with 11 or more employees will be required to provide all employees with “earned paid leave” that is accrued based on hours worked. This law applies immediately for non-unionized employees, and upon expiration of current collective bargaining agreements for unionized employees. The law does not necessarily require that school units add additional leave, but how the new leave requirements intersect with existing leave policies and contract provisions will be complex for school units to navigate.
In order to assist school units with starting the process of implementing this law, Drummond Woodsum has prepared a policy template for non-unionized employees.
