About the Firm
Founded in 1965, Drummond Woodsum & MacMahon has grown into one of Maine's largest and most well respected law firms, with offices in Portland, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Our attorneys have the expertise and experience to provide a full spectrum of legal services for our clients, which include some of the country's largest corporations, small start-up companies, national and state financial institutions, municipalities, school districts and individuals. We take pride in promptly delivering the highest quality legal advice in a cost efficient manner. We invite you to visit our practice area web pages for more information.
Individualized Service
Our goal is to provide our clients with service that addresses their immediate concerns while taking into account their long-term needs and objectives. When clients consult us, they usually have an immediate need for practical legal assistance; they expect us to provide legal advice in a timely fashion and at a cost that is proportionate to the economics of the transaction. By drawing upon the specialized skills of individual attorneys within our various service groups, we promptly respond to the specific needs of each client as they arise, with high caliber legal service and with an eye to the financial realities of the particular transaction or case.
Organization
We have organized the firm into service groups developed according to the particular needs of business sectors so that we can better meet our clients' needs. However, service group lines are not rigid. When a client's legal needs require the attention of attorneys from more than one group, we form a coordinated team with the appropriate mix of legal expertise. In the areas of environmental law, international transactions and health care, we also have more formalized practice groups, whose attorneys work together in an ongoing manner to provide up-to-date legal expertise in these rapidly changing fields of law.
Public Service
Our attorneys regard seriously their obligation to serve the community and those who cannot afford legal services. Members of the firm have served on the governing boards of numerous civic, educational and charitable institutions, including the Portland Museum of Art, the Portland Stage Company, the Portland Downtown Improvement Association, The Osher Map Library, Yale University Corporation and Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Members of the firm have held state and local office and a former member is currently Congressman from Maine's First Congressional District.
We are proud of our record in providing legal services to the poor. In 1995, Drummond Woodsum was the first recipient of the large firm Pro Bono Publico award from the Maine Bar Foundation. In 1998, we were one of the Portland firms to establish the Coffin Fellows Program, which funds fellowships for two attorneys who work full-time representing indigent clients in domestic relations matters. Additionally, a member of the firm served as Chair of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Lawyers Public Service Responsibility and was the recipient of the national William Reece Smith, Jr. award as well as the state Dana Award for leadership in the area of legal services for the poor. Many attorneys at the firm accept pro bono cases from the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project or serve as Lawyer of the Day at the Project's offices.

We restored these historic buildings on Portland's waterfront to serve as our offices. Our move here in 1985 was part of our commitment to be part of the revitalization of a great city.
